BBC Doctor Who fans issue complaint about 'annoying' lead character

The third episode of the new series of Doctor Who aired on BBC One, with The Doctor and his companion Ruby Sunday experiencing a traumatic ordeal on an abandoned planet.

Doctor Who: The Doctor and Ruby arrive on an abandoned planet

Fans who tuned into the latest episode of Doctor Who on BBC One all took to social media to complain about one of the lead characters. Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) finds herself in trouble when her and The Doctor face an unlikely doom.

Whilst Ncuti Gatwa has been amassing praise from his critics as the new Doctor, one or two viewers couldn't help but comment that Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) was "annoying" during the episode.

The new companion goes through a rather traumatic ordeal when The Doctor steps on a landmine. Staring at death in the face, Ruby and The Doctor race against the clock to try and save him, before they come across "Anglican Soldiers".

One person moaned on X: "Okay y'know what? I think Ruby is my problem. No offence to the actress, but the character is just p**sing me off. You know it's big danger but you stroll towards the Doctor any way and chat like he's not just standing on an alien land mine #DoctorWho."

A second chimed in: "Ruby's over-enthusiasm and excited screaming has so far been annoying. She needs to calm down #DoctorWho."

Despite this, many were delighted with the episode and gave Millie Gibson's character plenty of approval. One person said: "That was a great episode and a tremendous return for Stephen Moffat! Ncuti and Millie delivered great performances, and it was great to see the new companion involved too! Looking forward to seeing how she plays into the Doctor and Ruby’s story going forward! #DoctorWho."

Another person also said: "Ruby Sunday is growing on me. #DoctorWho," as a third fan also commented: "Another great episode incoming. Millie is phenomal as Ruby. Can’t wait for next week! #DoctorWho."

A fourth person penned: "Really liked the new Doctor Who! Not perfect, and I there was a better edit possible, but there was a lot I enjoyed. Nice to see Ruby and 15’s dynamic evolve a little!"

The third episode comes after the new season dropped last weekend before The Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest. Despite high anticipation, the first two episodes were branded "woke" and "unwatchable" by fans as viewer ratings dropped.

The BBC One premiere of episode one (Space Babies) on Saturday night consisted of only 2.6 million viewers and 2.4 million for the second episode (The Devil's Chord).

These figures do not take into account streaming figures on BBC iPlayer, on which the episodes are available to stream prior to their broadcast on BBC One on Saturday evening.

Doctor Who returns on Saturday 25 May on BBC One.
