and Caroline Wozniacki abruptly called off their engagement a decade ago, with a friend of the tennis star now having their say on the Northern Irishman and his divorce filing from wife Erica Stoll. On the eve of the Championship, McIlroy submitted the documents in Florida in which their marriage was described as “irretrievably broken”.

McIlroy was due to marry Wozniacki but the golf star realised “that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails” before tying the knot with Stoll in 2017, after initially meeting when she worked for the PGA of America at the 2012 at Medinah.

Stoll gave birth to their first child, Poppy, three years after getting married, but McIlroy’s communications team confirming the pair’s separation.

"Rory's desire is to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible," the statement read. "He won't be making any further comment."

A friend of Wozniacki has since spoken out on the golfer, savaging him over their split as they claimed that the reason McIlroy was so fond of the Danish former world No. 1 was the same excuse that the "spoiled" 35-year-old gave for calling off their wedding plans.

“When McIlroy and Caroline met, he loved that she was as famous as him and understood sport. When they split up, it was because she was as famous as him and understood sport,” Wozniacki’s friend told the Daily Mail.

“The poor woman couldn't win. It was all about him and whenever anything went wrong it was her fault. A lot of these sportsmen who have been playing since they were young are entirely selfish.

“The reason Erica appealed more than Caroline was that Erica looked after him and allowed him to be like a spoiled teenager. He'd always tell the story about how he and Erica met and how she saved him from being late to the tee. Caroline never had any time for that because she was always playing tennis.”

In the aftermath of their relationship breaking down, Wozniacki gave her side of the story in an interview with Yahoo News and discussed how taken aback she was by the sudden nature of McIlroy’s decision to initiate their split without an in-person conversation.

“It was very hard because he made it very public from the start,” she explained. “He put out a press release so I didn’t have a choice, you know, it just got put in my face.

“Oh I was shocked. I thought at least, you know, I would get a face-to-face or something. But there was nothing – it was just a phone call and I did not hear from him again. I don’t think you expect to find yourself in a situation like that, you can’t prepare yourself or your body for anything like that so I think I was in a bit of a shocked phase there for a while.”
