C'mon Dave, wake up

Does David Cameron understand Middle Britain?

Almost his first move as Tory leader was to back the Government on top-up fees which penalise bright children from modest middle class homes. That led me to worry that he just did not understand the outlook of debt-averse people who come from homes where money is relatively tight.

Now he has poured scorn on grammar schools and appears to be siding against aspirational parents who want the best for their children. All those dedicated mums and dads who ensure an educationally stimulating environment for their children are apparently the enemy of equality in the eyes of Cameron's New Tories.

In New Tory eyes such parents are "cheating" by giving their children a better than average chance of getting into grammar schools when they come up against the under-stimulated offspring of less dedicated mums and dads. Because of the actions of loving parents, the Tories have decided that grammar schools are not the way forward.

So if you want a selective, highly academic education for your child you'll have to go private; like Mr Cameron's parents did and like his shadow education secretary David Willetts did for his own children. If you cannot afford it, as most of Middle Britain cann...
