The tall poppy syndrome is said to owe its name to the saying “it is the tall poppy that is the first to be cut."
Whatever its origin it has come to signify an unpleasant human trait which more or less equates with the jealousy of success.
The expression "cut down to size" and "taken down a peg or two" suggests that the successful person has got "too big for their own boots" and invited the setback by becoming swollenheaded.
But the tall poppy expression is more ambiguous.
A while back Australians - who are said to have originated the phrase - hotly debated the issue. It could be argued that it reflected an independent spirit which scoffed at cant and cared little for authority and traced its roots back to the nation's convict beginnings.
But there was - and perhaps still is - a negative side of egalitarianism in a country which prides itself that no man or woman is better than any other.
This, when taken to an extreme, despises the successful however legitimate their achievement. Strange this in a nation that idolises it sporting stars who by definition stand out from the crowd.
The tall poppy syndrome is at work in the UK.
Is there something in the often-quoted description of the supposed reactions between Americans and Brits on seeing a luxury car in that the former would love to own it and the latter to scratch it?
I hope not.
But I have never understood how soccer stars salaries - which can be astronomic - rarely attract controversy.
Yet those in the top flight of the business world, who can be responsible for thousands of jobs and billions of pounds of tax revenue, are regularly singled out for what they earn rather than what they achieve.

What, in the name of any sort of sanity or maturity, is the point of wastimg time, energy and emotions on envy?. None of us can be all things to all men and women. Or have all the wealth we could crave for. Some of us get things in spades as though having them poured in by a blind benefactor. Others struggle, pay their taxes and die. None of Human life really makes sense because there is no sense behind it all. Semi-organised chaos with good and bad luck stirred in. Mix all this with such a wide range of I.Q.'s from the moron to the genius, and what have you got?. Welcome to planet Earth, suckers..

MENTALITY OF THIS COUNTRY

I remember reading an article on the difference between UK and USA - In the USA if someone is successful people say 'I want to be like him oneday'
In the UK they say 'I will STOP him from being successful'
That SUMS IT UP -
People are not equal - Its those that are successful employ others - and ones who cannot get off their backsides and claim false benefit don't deserve to get anything - LEACHES ON SOCIETY.

THE RED CARPET OF MY SHOULDER.
26.04.2008, 9:43pm
Early in the
morning, when
gloomy canticles
rejoice in the
sound of the quietness,
I hear a scrupulous
voice on the sun
of a summer, while
a sadness delights
and discovers a care.

When I was very young I knew another Teen a little older who had everything. I was not unhappy but I let the thought enter my mind, I wish I was Guy. The very next day he was killed in a car accident. I never let such a thought ever again occupy my mind.

TALL POPPIES?

“I have never understood how soccer stars salaries - which can be astronomic - rarely attract controversy”.
On the other hand, MP’s salaries and expense accounts - which can be astronomic – frequently do attract controversy.
For the most part MP’s are actually “small poppies” who would not come up to scratch if exposed to the real world. Our MP’s are normally untrained, unskilled and incompetent and do not deserve their cushy positions or the big salaries they get. That is not jealousy: it is a fact. Take the unelected Gormless Brown for example and his “big idea” of plastic bags. Is his performance that of a Tall Poppy or a Small Poppy seed? I think we can all draw the right conclusion. I am all in favour of success when deserved, but in the case of MP’s it is not their salary level I object to, it is the fact that they are doing such a dreadful job for British working people. Our MP’s are lining their own pockets at our expense.
