Arctic Monkey's frontman Alex Turner publicly apologised to Gary Barlow in 2011 after slamming the singer and Take That years earlier, calling their music "b*****ks" as they battled for fans.

Arctic Monkeys had garnered a small but dedicated fanbase in 2006 after a string of successful singles and were hoping to catapult to the top of the charts with their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.

However, their rise to stardom was interrupted as Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen and Jason Orange reunited.

The Take That reunion overwhelmed fans across the globe and saw the singers taking on a sold-out arena tour and dropping a chart-topping single, Patience.

Patience ultimately took home the Brit Award for Single of the Year, much to the chagrin of Arctic Monkeys and particularly their Sheffield-born frontman Alex Turner.

The 37-year-old slammed Take That’s music as “a load of old b*****ks” later that year at the Q Awards, where the band had won Best Album and People’s Choice Award.

This became the first spark in a years-long feud between the two competing bands, with the battle returning to headlines in 2008 when both were nominated again for the same awards at the Brits.

Rumours ravaged both fanbases at the time, with Take That expecting to bring home Best Group, Best Single and Best Album gongs while many speculated that their Sheffield rivals would give the entire event a miss.

However, the feud was seemingly thrown on its head for the evening as Arctic Monkeys did in fact appear at the awards, dressed in upper-class hunting apparel, and swiped Best Group and Best Album away from Take That.

As the group headed to the stage to accept the Best Album gong, announcers revealed Take That was “just a handful of votes behind” them in the final tally.

The row continued until 2011, when news of Gary’s struggle with the spotlight and reasoning behind his seclusion surfaced.

Speaking to NME in 2011, Alex declared: “We love Gary Barlow. I think I really offended him a few years ago though, which I’m sorry about.

“I didn’t understand it then. Didn’t know what was going on, trying to ruffle some feathers.”

Arctic Monkeys are set to headline the Glastonbury Festival this year as they close out the Pyramid Stage on Friday evening.
