Michael Palin enjoying life at 80 but warns Monty Python reunion unlikely

Monty Python legend Sir Michael Palin has lifted the lid on the joys of being 80, saying the milestone allows him to behave badly and not worry about the competition.

The avid globetrotter said: “How is life at 80? I don’t know yet. I am still learning. Amazingly, I still feel physically and mentally interested in life.

“You get the feeling most of life is behind you now, rather than ahead of you, but that gives a slight feeling of irresponsibility. You don’t have to worry about the competition any more.”

While Sir Michael was speaking at a literary lunch staged by The Oldie magazine, the Python star joked he does not see himself as an “oldie”.

But he does wish he was as “bendy” as fellow knight and octogenarian Mick Jagger, whose band The Rolling Stones have announced a 20-date tour of the US for 2024.

Sir Michael said: “The music must energise you. To keep going for that length of time is quite something.”

Yet he says a Monty Python reunion is unlikely.

“Terry has died, so there are only four of us now. You can’t do it without Terry or Graham.”
