Tony Blackburn hits out at BBC and ITV for ‘unbelievable’ amount of football coverage
BBC Radio 2 veteran Tony Blackburn appeared to be sick of mainstream television's non-stop football coverage this evening, as Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United play in the latest FA Cup match.
Tony Blackburn took to social media to share his frustration today, complaining there was too much football coverage on mainstream television for his liking. The BBC Radio 2 presenter aired his frustrations on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, after the latest FA Cup match kicked off.
Tonight, Blackburn is hosting Newcastle in the FA Cup fifth round, as the visitors hope to rescue their season. However, not every television viewer in the UK is a football fan, as Tony made very clear.
Addressing his 119,200 followers, he lamented: “Unbelievable, BBC 1 and 2 also ITV all have football on at the same time. Great choice for all of us who don’t like football.
“Never mind there’s so much choice now it’s easy to avoid the ‘Beautiful Game’,” he added more optimistically. The FA cup match is currently being streamed on BBC One and ITV, while BBC Two appears to be airing regularly scheduled content depending on the region.
Taking to the comments section, plenty of fans wrote in to agree with Tony’s stance on the coverage. One viewer complained: “Sick of it Tony!” (sic)
While another sent a laughing emoji with the sarcastic comment: “Surely there's not enough football on at the weekends.”
“I always think that the BBC should have their own sports channel,” one pondered, while one more said: “I agree, Tony.
“With all the sports channels available surely they could put sports on them instead of mainstream channels.”
A fifth penned: “It’s terrible, elderly may not wish to watch it and I most certainly do not, should never be scheduled on both main channels. Need to put on other freeview available channels.” (sic)
However, some were confused by Tony’s post, as programmes like The Hairy Bikers Go West and The Great British Menu were playing in their regions.
