Zoe Ball emotionally says 'times are tough' in heartbreaking update on mum's cancer

BBC Radio 2 Breakfast host Zoe Ball has been taking regular breaks from her show to care for her mum Julia Ball, who announced her cancer diagnosis in March.

Zoe Ball reveals her mum has been moved into hospice care

Zoe Ball has emotionally told fans that her mum Julia Ball is now in a hospice after announcing her cancer diagnosis last month. After Gaby Roslin stepped in to host her BBC Radio 2 Breakfast show yesterday, Zoe returned today and kicked off the show addressing for her absence.

Zoe began by thanking stand-in host Gaby for taking care of her show while she cared for her mum with her brother. Later on in the programme, she gave an emotional update about her mum's progress as she praised those running for pancreatic cancer in the marathon.

After playing a Bon Jovi song, Zoe dedicated the track to "the most amazing paramedics" Bill and Simon who helped take her mum to a hospice this week. Seeming emotional, she added: "They were so gentle with her, so kind, very funny and absolutely lovely.

"Mum's in hospice now, pretty tough at the moment for the family. I just want to say thank you to John, Scarlett and Charlie, both Charlies actually and Sophie and Laura who are really looking after mum."

Zoe went on to send "loads of love" to anyone else who is also going through a similar experience, adding: "I know so many people in the same position as Jamie my bro, and my dear mum at the moment.

"Things are really tough for my mum at the moment, just sending out loads of love. And, especially to anyone who is running the marathon this special causes.

"Big shout out to anyone running for cancer charities, especially pancreatic cancer, you're all superheroes. Love you mum."

During a break from her show in March, Zoe announced that her mum had cancer and would therefore be taking breaks from her work commitments to provide care.

In an emotional post, she said her mum had been "incredibly brave" and was "completely in awe" of the medical staff looking after her.

The presenter went on to say: "Gratitude to our families & our extended family & friends at home & at work for their support at this time.

"Sending out love to people reading this who are battling cancer, or awaiting diagnosis & also to the folk looking after their dear ones who are poorly."

Zoe added she was trying to present her show as often as possible but would "occasionally need to be home with my mama".

The presenter's latest update comes after ITV announced that her show Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream will not be returning to screens.

A spokesperson told The Mirror: “Mamma Mia I Have A Dream was commissioned to celebrate 25 years of the musical, so was only ever intended to be a one-off series."

“The show sought to find a new Sophie and Sky, who are now starring in the West End musical.”

However, the broadcaster could replace the series with another competition to find musical talent in the future.

Zoe Ball's BBC Breakfast Show airs weekdays from 6.30am on BBC Radio 2.
