Doctor Who star's future on show confirmed following brutal 'axe' rumours

Rumours have swirled, suggesting that Ruby Sunday's future on Doctor Who would be coming to an end, with actress Millie Gibson's fate revealed.

Doctor Who: Millie Gibson announced as the new companion

Doctor Who fans will be delighted as it has been revealed that Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson) will return in season two. Earlier this week, rumours indicated the BBC actress would be exiting the show.

Back in 2022, the former Corrie star, 19, was announced as the faithful sidekick to the Doctor live on Children in Need. The blonde beauty has since become a beloved member of the cast as she stars alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the latest Time Lord.

Ruby, who is played by Millie, was said to be stepping down as the Doctor’s companion and only appearing in a handful of episodes. But it has since been reported that she will be returning for the full season.

She will also return to the small screen alongside Andor [Varada Sethu]. In a recent interview, showrunner Russell T Davies exclusively revealed her storyline will last at least two years.

"Not leaving. Not at all. We were ordered for two years of a series of Disney and we're delivering two years, and the Ruby Sunday story literally spans those two years," he told SFX Magazine.

He added: "We are planning [to] shoot the [season two] finale in which Ruby has the most magnificent scenes, and Millie, it's some of your most challenging material yet, isn't it? It will all make sense once you see it play out.”

Mr Davies was shocked to hear that the rumours hit the headlines and branded the recent situation “difficult”.

"We're in a very difficult position because you can't answer rumour, you can't speak to rumour, we can't try and pin it down because the internet will just run away,” he said.

Mr Davies also confessed that it is complex shooting the second series while the first season is still being broadcast.

“All sorts of problems can happen that way that we saw coming, but what do we do? Stop shooting? No. We're making such a good show,” explained the screenwriter.

He has high hopes for the youngster and has been given some “extraordinary” storylines with viewers seeing her talents.

The television producer could barely contain his excitement as he teased Ruby’s future. He said that he was “burning” for people to see what she would be working on.

He said that it is “wonderful” and she has so much “milage” as a character.

The long-running show will return for a brand-new season in May after starting back in 1963 sci-fi fans are set to expect drama and nail-biting scenes.

Doctor Who episodes are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
