The three, members of the choir created and made famous on BBC Two by Gareth Malone, will spend the festive break in their home town, Braunton, Devon, at work looking after elderly and disabled residents in a care home.

Yesterday at the Tyspane Care Centre, Sarah Wall, Hayley Flood and Carly Pearce told of their pride and surprise at finding the choir’s single almost certain to beat X Factor’s Little Mix to this year’s Number One.

Sarah, 32, whose husband Mark is a military policeman, is planning to slip away from work to hear the charts on Christmas Day. “I’ve not asked yet but I’m hoping to sneak out about 6.30pm,” she said. “It should be really good fun.”

Mother of-two Carly, 31, whose husband Darren is a medic with the Royal Navy, said: “I don’t think the residents here can believe it.”

Co-worker Hayley, 35, married to Staff Sergeant Jimmy Flood of the Royal Engineers, is working on Boxing Day and at New Year.

This truly is an extraordinary result – easily the fastest selling record for years.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot

As of midnight on Tuesday 319,000 copies of the choir single, Wherever You Are, had been sold. Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said, “This truly is an extraordinary result – easily the fastest selling record for years.”

VAT from sales of the single will go to charity as will sale proceeds. The Military Wives choir is made up of about 100 military wives and girlfriends from RMB Chivenor in north Devon and Plymouth.
