£lost in translation

To add to the firstcomment; according to figures published by Slough council the additional translation costs for pupils now means that the budget for each child is £30,000 compared with an average of £4200 across the UK. Unsurprisingly, the budget allowance per child is higher in inner city and Nu-Labour areas than elsewhere.
Translation and interpretation ‘services’ are nothing short of a fraud-ridden scandal. Paying one set of immigrants to translate or interpret for another is not only stupid but unnecessary as the one requiring the ‘service’ may well speak English but chooses not to admit it as it’s a nice little earner for a friend of a friend.
In schools all the extra staff are not only a distraction but become a focus point for extra curriculum studies such as learning how to say ‘fork’ in 20 different languages instead of concentrating on basic subjects.
How about a Poll Tax levied on each immigrant community to pay for translations? Observe the number of immigrants able to speak English miraculously increase a 100- fold.
Ask any Police, Immigration, or Customs and Excise officer dealing with immigrants, including those who have lived here most of their lives, how good is the standard of English among the people they deal with in an official capacity, and they will tell you it is nearly always very good…until you start to ask awkward questions!
