On the subject of the Yorkshire Ripper, I think it was more the old fashioned card index system that they had instead of a computer that allowed Peter Sutcliffe to remain at large for so long. Despite being interviewed several times and his mentally retarded wife giving him an alibi they also had the human error factor of a pride driven copper who honestly believed that he had personal communication with a vicious hoaxer.
