Why do we pay more for diesel than petrol?

I thought everyone knew that one. About 10 years ago this government encouraged more car manufactures to design and produce more diesel cars. They said they were less damaging to the environment giving off less emissions, were cheaper to run due to higher mileage per gallon and the government put less tax on diesel than petrol, noticeably in the yearly budgets.
It was all designed to entrap the unsuspecting public as after listening to government spin and the economical benefits of diesel, manufacturers made more effort to make diesel cars more attractive with better performance and of course the public started to buy diesel cars and they became all the rage. It was cheaper, more mileage per gallon but most of all good for reducing global warming.
Thats when the government moved by stealth, bit by bit year by year they have increased tax on diesel as they now realised that a larger percentage of British motorists had switched to diesel.
So after encouraging more of us to switch to diesel with lower cost incentives, they now switch tactics and reap in the benefits, it has been one of this governments most classic cons and deceptions, I am surprised more has not been said about it.
