ITS ALL ABOUT THE EU - AS ALWAYS

I find it interesting how individuals and political parties (eg Liberal Democrats) can be so pro-EU and yet object to ID cards. Most EU countries have had ID cards for many decades and they are the cornerstone of their ability to fight crime and control immigration. These countries readily dismantled their borders only because unlike the UK they never relied upon passport control on entry. They relied instead on an internal ID card based system of immigration control. Unfortunately the reallities and implications of all this were glossed over by Ted Heath when he took us into the then European Common Market (forerunner of the present EU). .

I share the fears of those objectors about a surveiillance society but we really have ended up now with the worst of all worlds. As usual we have our politicians to thank for that.
