NewAgeDad - I had to respond to your post

First - your family is fortunate.

I live in the States and in a state, Arizona, where fresh fruit and vegetables are abundant. But there is strong competition from McDonalds and Burger King which keep on "supersizing" everything. As do the restaurants! Huge plates of food are treated as normal fare in restaurants here. People have got used to eating big, bigger and bigger still. The TV doesn't help with the constant pushing of unhealthy food. And there watching all this are the kids, and partaking. Now children are having tummy tucks and liposuction. It is so sad.

When adults are obese it is bad enough, but there is nothing worse than the sight of a child in that condition. Children at school can be very cruel. The obese children deny themselves all kinds of sports and are left off teams because of their weight. Yet you see adults here who are huge, with their mirror-image children walking alongside them, so you know where the influence came from. What incentive is there for a child to go on a healthy food diet in such circumstances? The schools here are trying by banning unhealthy snacks and sugar sodas, but it's difficult because the kids go home to the same old same old. And oh that advertising. I still think that is a major source of the problem.

Now Australia leads the world, #1 in the obese, next comes the U.S., and I suppose Britain is coming in a challenging #3. I cringe for the children. Your son is lucky.
