I myself am not saying that broken laws should be ignored but what your describing is the extreme.
A lot of the people commenting on this article are talking about the actions that police chiefs are demanding from the officers on the ground for things that usually a good talking to would change, not just fines and issuing points.
The accident rates and fatalities of drivers and pedestrians in Britain has reduced quite significantly in the past few years from the introduction of education for learner drivers. And this is with the increase of cars on the road.
The uptake of advanced driving courses has almost doubled in the same amount of time.
I was once speaking to a traffic officer who's been in the force for a number of years told me that the biggest problem they have now are foreign drivers.
They flout the law because they know they can get away with it. They will pull the 'no speak no English' with no documents excuse and even when arrested on the spot and bailed they would just disappear without a trace. This needs to addressed the most.
The only way to penalise them would be to hold them in until the date of court and then they could commence their punishment after trial but this, as we all know, would be in your face totalitarianism and the government wouldn't have that in today's 'Free World'.
If issuing points and fines were going to change things then perhaps the politicians should introduce a similar system to people on the street who are out there causing trouble and committing acts of violence and so on.
