Considering how much revenue the Treasury creams off motorist in the UK every year, we should have the best roads of any country.

Unfortunately, the general state of the roads is deplorable. Our roads are in a shocking state of ill-repair for the simple reason the Treasury regards the motorist as the fattest cash-cow on the planet - and the actual amount spent on maintaining roads falls every year.

The tax goes UP. The roads become more treacherous to drive on.

Perhaps the time is right for the UK to take take a closer look at why other countries in Europe - notably Germany, France and Portugal - can provide first class roads which are actually a pleasure to travel on.
