Cheap?

Can anyone recall a time when energy was cheap? I certainly cannot recall such an event.
We in the UK have always been burdened with costly fuel bills even when we were dragging it out of the North Sea at a cost of peanuts.
Successful governments (always alert to a fast buck) penalised the producers by taxation at source. This as usual was always passed on to ignoramus in the street.
Apart from the VAT added onto all things related to Oil & Gas we had, for donkeys years ,
a tariff appended to cost of energy used, for the service and upkeep of the monitoring device installed; namely the meter. (we still pay for the wretched thing despite it not being shown on the bill).
Now the question is how many times has this meter failed over donkeys years it has been in service, needing replacement. Mine never has!
So someone in the supply chain has made another killing there.
Secondly how accurate is the damned thing?
I have a sneaky feeling these devices are like aging cars. The older they get the more costly they are to run. The old car will guzzle more fuel and oil for the same performance. Does the Electric /Gas meter indicate more when using less?
Energy in the UK has never been cheap.
One thing is for sure we are all going to pay a lot more for using a lot less!
