I am British and never lose an opportunity - or rather never lost an opportunity - to declare that Britain, Britons, stand for fair play. From the playing fields of Eton, throughout the UK, this has always been so. It almost seemed to be an English heritage passed on from father to son, etc. No more.

Gordon Brown seems to suffer the same fate as George Bush and with monotonous regularity in both cases. No matter what they do or say, there are the critics on their marks ready to let fly.

I personally admire anyone who has the guts to get himself over to Iraq or Afghanistan. I admire the British and American troops. Admiration is due for Prince Harry who did it, to Prince William doing his bit elsewhere, and yes to Camilla. Ir's easy to be an armchair critic, or have your say from Fleet Street. No risk in that. In the USA you would earn the title Monday Morning Quarterbacks -- One who criticizes or passes judgment from a position of hindsight.

I'm tempted to send Mr. Brown an anecdote of John Kenney who found himself hauled over the coals and with egg on his face of the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Spain's top bullfighter at the time, Domingo Ortega, sent Kennedy a signed photograph which the following quotation: "Afficianados (fans) ranked in rows crowd the enormous plaza full, but only one is there who knows and he's the man who fights the bull."

Stop waving a cape at the bull, Daily Express, and get yourselves over in Iraq with or without a machine gun. You might just get a new perspective on what it's like to in the bull ring all the time - getting gored.
