Appalling abuse of Donkeys .... stop the suffering now!

Published: Wednesday October 31,2007 by greektails

We all know there are many injustices towards all species around the world. The fact that we're highlighting animals in Greece happens to be the focus and long overdue.

I've travelled to Greece numerous times since and back in 1998 decided to do my part to help, even though I live some 5,000 miles away. I've come to know many people in Greece who help but the general public just doesn't seem to care nor do they think of cats & dogs as companion animals and a farm animal is only 'safe' for as long as it's producing either food or money for the owner.

I've seen donkeys with hooves so overgrown that they can't walk without being in pain; others with raw ears, eyes and tail from being eaten alive from flies and other insects.

By nature, donkeys are such gentle creatures and it's a tragedy they suffer endlessly in sweltering heat, day in, day out especially for the sake of the almighty buck.

Maybe those who think there's no need for enforcement of animal protection laws in Greece or that we're all exaggerating the situation, ask yourself why I'm rehoming stray dogs & cats some 5,000 miles away; why are there over 100 dogs & cats living in Canada, with their vet and travel expenses paid for by a local Greek? Simply because people of Greece are not interested in adopting homeless animals, pet owners don't spay/neuter; and vets don't promote it either.

It's high-time those in the position to enforce animal cruelty laws in Greece begin to do so. You can see several examples of deliberate animal cruelty at www.garcanada.com if you still don't believe it exists. Again, keep in mind we all know there are problems in the world; this is not a personal vendetta against all Greek citizens. Turn that thought around in your head and make it a positive action instead.
