My Polish Mother-in-law spoke very poor english 'til the day she died. She lived in Britain for 54 years. There is a choice involved in all of this. The Poles by and large choose not to mix and so speaking english isn't that important. The word soon goes round in Polish when state benefits are involved, it always did.
