Development of brownfield sites

Published: Thursday November 22,2007 by Jacko

It is a good idea to use brownfield sites but the cost to develop on these sites is generally hirer than green sites because of polution. Many brown sites which have been sites of past industrial use have been contaminated with various toxins from the industrial activeties od the past.
The cost of decontamination of the sites for housing development is very high and the profit margines minimal for the developer. The notion of using brownfield sites for developing affordable homes for low income workers is flawed. Some brownfield sites where old housing states (slums) once stood are generally free from contamination but these are far and few for the amount of housing that is required. There are hundreds of acres owned by major super market companys on the outskirts of towns that can be used for housing development.....Ruth Kelly should be looking into this area and talking to the owners.
Ruth Kelly will be a failure at this idea as she has been a failure in her previous government posts.
