Do we let too many immigrants into Britain?

A BRITISH haulage tycoon pulled his lorries out of Europe for the first time in 30 years yesterday, declaring: “Illegal immigrant fines are putting me out of business.”

The overwhelming feeling we get is "yes we do", and the vast majority of posters here agree.

Personnally, I think its because we were not selective, the goverment opened the doors and the poor, unskilled and uneducated of the world rushed here, the land of milk and honey, with benefits and freebies for all.

This is what has irked the indigenous UK populace.

If we had selected the people we wanted on the basis of skills and education, and those who came wanted to integrate, the I dont think that this problem would have arisen.

But we have here, religious nutters (Hamza for instance) who are illegal immigrants, have never worked, and live well on UK benefits, this really annoys me and I know many, many others.

The lack of integration is another problem, already we have ethnic ghettos, these will cause problems for years to come, and eventually will have to be broken up

As long as the problem goes on, this thread should go on.

I have no idea what they teach at the fabian LSE these days, but my understanding is if the marketplace is flooded with supply (i.e labour) then the price (wages) falls.

the last one is the most stupid.The vast majority of the comments here suggest that we let far too many immigrants into the country. The left are so arrogant. My experience of life has taught me that usually the most arrogant people have precious little reason to be arrogant

so are you looking for a population cull there 'thor'.

and how do you plan for that to come about? after all, only 10% of the country is foreign born, that leaves a whole lotta locals that have to go too...

something tells me that if we had to cut the population in half, keeping only the best and brightest, you would struggle to make the cut.

If a country can produce only enough food to feed half the people,that country had better have something of real value with which to trade. We do not seem to be in that fortunate position,so the last thing we need is more mouths to feed.

we actually need 200 000 people per year to avoid a labour, tax and funding calamity that will be the result of falling birthrates, and emigration to other countries (over 200 000 per year leave the UK).

A net influx of 200,000 new people every year, or 1 million every 5 years is not a good thing. Mass immigration puts huge strain on schools, hospitals, housing and transport. It also discourages some of the 5 million unemployed in the UK from finding work. The only beneficiaries are employers who have a large supply of labour so they can bid down wages and working conditions. The welfare state in the UK should primarily benefit those who have been here a long time and paid the most into it. There should be no more immigration unless the immigrant has essential skills that cannot be sourced locally, and we need no more unskilled migrants.

when they say they are better educated than us. Clearly,some immigrants do benefit the country,and some are fleeing (past several other safe havens) for their lives. However,the majority of third world immigrants are unskilled,poorly educated,some have infectious diseases,many are totaly dependant on social security,and some of them hate us and want to destoy us

your understanding of immigration is very limited, likely due to too much exposure to tabloids.

in fact, as a group, immigrants are better educated and earn on average more than the average brit. (look it up. it is an easy thing to prove. i would provide you with links, but apparently that is not allowed anymore... evidence for points is apparently threatening).

immigrants are more than merely a source of cheap labour.

without immigrants, key services such ad medicine (both docitors and nurses) dentisty, transport, care of the elderly, and the service sector in general would be in deed trouble. and all of us would suffer with poor service and higher charges.

in terms of primary and secondary industry. well, farmers are already complaining about the lack of workers (they are short by one third) due to changes in migrant labour policy introduced last year. and what fishing industry there is left would suffer too.

and the outsourcing of cal centre work and manufacturing jobs already demonstrates that these jobs will dissapear offshore unless we have a competitive labour force here which can fill them.

Iftakhar, if you want state funded schools especially for muslims, may I suggest you go and live in a muslim country. I'm quite prepared to take the risk of economic collapse if immigration was stopped. I would rank that risk on a par with the millenium bug,man-made global warming,and being abducted by an alien spacecraft together with Lord Lucan.
Snflartuz,just a couple of points. You suggested our fishing industry would suffer without immigrants! The EU destroyed our fishing industry several years ago. Switch on.
And did you not mention bus drivers? Did you read the (non story you'd call it) about the Manchester bus company employing cheap East European Labour? A chap worked 31 days straight ended up killing people as he couldn't read the signs.
The only people to benefit from the recent influx of unwanted immigrants are mainly landlords and minimum wage employers.Apart from NuLab of course.Importing welfare hungry immigrants in order to shore up their diminishing support.
