ARTICLE SUMMARY

Do we let too many immigrants into Britain?

A BRITISH haulage tycoon pulled his lorries out of Europe for the first time in 30 years yesterday, declaring: “Illegal immigrant fines are putting me out of business.”

IFTAKHAR & SNFLARTUZ

15.07.08, 2:29pm

Iftakhar, if you want state funded schools especially for muslims, may I suggest you go and live in a muslim country. I'm quite prepared to take the risk of economic collapse if immigration was stopped. I would rank that risk on a par with the millenium bug,man-made global warming, and being abducted by an alien spacecraft together with Lord Lucan.
Snflartuz, just a couple of points. You suggested our fishing industry would suffer without immigrants! The EU destroyed our fishing industry several years ago. Switch on.
And did you not mention bus drivers? Did you read the (non story you'd call it) about the Manchester bus company employing cheap East European Labour? A chap worked 31 days straight ended up killing people as he couldn't read the signs.
The only people to benefit from the recent influx of unwanted immigrants are mainly landlords and minimum wage employers.Apart from NuLab of course.Importing welfare hungry immigrants in order to shore up their diminishing support.

TOO MANY IMMIGRANTS INTO BRITAIN

15.07.08, 12:42pm

Salaam

British society is a broken society. The numbner of young people are declining. Without migration the British society and economy wil bleed to death.

Mugrants must learn English and at the same time migrant's children must have their own schools with their own bilingual teachers as role models.

Bilingual Muslim children need state funded Muslim schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models.

They need to learn and be well versed in standard Engllish to follow the National Curriculum and go for higher studies and research to serve humanity. They need to learn and be well versed in Arabic, Urdu and other community languages to keep in touch with their cultural roots and enjoy the beauty of their literature and poetry.

A Muslim is a citizen of this tinyt global village. He/she does not want to become notoriously monolingual Brit.

GOODBYE, GREAT BRITAIN!

14.07.08, 11:01pm

Our rulers are a gang of treacherous political pygmies.

These small-minded traitors could not give a damn about our national identity and are hell-bent on merging us into one big “happy” European family - the suicidal EU Super-State with open borders and no national boundaries.

Great Britain is a small, overcrowded island. We cannot absorb the whole of mainland Europe so we should severely limit all further immigration until we have properly organised our own affairs and deported all illegals we have here now.

With all the aid that our Dear (self appointed) Leader, Gormless Mc Clown has sent to foreign countries, it is amazing that any foreigners need to move here at all, except those who want to go on immediate benefits with no risk of being deported, no matter what they do wrong while they are here.

If this is not a warning signal to pull out absolutely from this EU madhouse, I do not know what is!

Voting for the three main parties is just voting the country into a void - as is staying at home on polling day. British voters really need to start thinking hard and sensibly, and go out and vote confidently at elections for parties that propose to pull out of the EU.

your mature comment demonstrates that you are obviously not familiar with semantics.

too bad.

if you care to say something constructive i'd be happy to listen and engage with it.

but somehow, i don't think that's going to happen.

did i say 'the whole of british industry'? no. maybr try reading.

however, much of agriculture would have a terrible time, thats for sure. many types of manufaturing, and the fishing industry as well.

not to mention the infrasturcure problems that would result from not having enough bus drivers, nurses, doctors, cleaners etc.

and of course, the service industry would have huge problems as well.

and actually, godefroy, i have a phd in economics. so chances are that i know a little more about the topic than you.

IT IS OBVIOUS

14.07.08, 11:07am

With the drain on our resourses the answer is
obvious, many people are suffering from mass immigration, controlled is one thing this free for all is madness and very expensive with people who have no right to be here and have contributed nothing to this country. It is a too higher price to pay for labour votes endeavouring to keep them in power from the 'ever grateful'

TOO MANY IMMIGRANTS

12.07.08, 9:56pm

Nu labour says we needed these immigrants to fill the jobs, if that was correct therefore when mass unemployment happens which it will as it always does after collapse of housing market, we wont need any more immigrants because there will be no jobs for them to fill

So the whole British industry will collapse if we dont have the immigrants to fill the vacancies ?

Interesting theory !! I can see economics isnt your strong point !!

GAZZALW

some actually resonable points made. you are right, the jobs are there, they are vacant.
some are low paying, and have to be, because they compete with labour markets around the world. that will not change. If we don't have people here to fill those jobs, they will dissaprear, along with british industry.

however, it is important to note that, on average, immigrants as a population earn more than the average brit. so it is unfair to suggest that they are 'cheap labour'. in actual fact, they, on average, are better educated, higher earners, than brits.

that also means that they contribute more in taxes and nhs contributions than the average brit.

they also help to soften the coming pensions crisis by providing more working age people to support the huge numbers of baby-boomers who will be retiring soon.

so, overall, they are vastly beneficial for our economy and our standard of living.

anyway, it's becoming less of a point, as immigration rates are declining now with a slowing of the economy.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

11.07.08, 4:50pm

There are also several comments here from people saying people who have come here illegally and are working should be deported full stop. Well fine as long as as soon as you deport an illegal worker you fill that position (or force the employer) to take on someone who has legal status to be here (preferably by showing a birth certificate). The employer needs a worker (usually a cheap one) and we have 150,000 teenager leaving school each year with NO qualifications apparently. Problem solved.

Perhaps 50,000 of them could be employed digging a canal between London and Birmingham (for example) so we can move freight by barge rather than by road and rail. That would give them some backbone.

ASYLUM SEEKERS

11.07.08, 4:42pm

Please also bear in mind that people with this status or more to the point those seeking asylum are INELIGIBLE to work. So we therefore spend money on all the legal stuff keeping people out of work even though they came here to work, would LOVE to work and would love to contribute to society now does that make them worse than someone who has NEVER worked, doesn't want to work and would turn down a job if it was offered?

If you have left school at 15 with no qualifications how does that make you 'better' than the minimum wage? In my book you should think yourself damned lucky to get it.
