The Tonedale Mill development in Somerset

Friday April 4,2008

By Andrea Watson

AN HISTORIC mill has recently come on the market in Wellington, Somerset.

Tonedale Mill is being redeveloped to provide homes and a touristattraction for the town.

The mill, dating from 1709, is famed for being the place where the dye khaki was invented, ending the British soldiers’
“redcoats”. It became the largest integrated woollen mill in the South-west.

Developer Hymore is now incorporating industrial and period features in its new homes. The site, which houses Grade I and II listed buildings, will offer a choice of  converted and new-build properties, some offering countryside views.

There is a mixture of 141 apartments priced from £115,000, and 82 houses costing £210,000 or more built over three phases. Tonedale will also have a large commercial space.

Tim Wadsworth, of Hymore, said: “Tonedale Mill has all the ingredients to develop a new sustainable community for Wellington while providing quality housing for first-time buyers and families in a unique setting.”

Wellington, between the River Tone and the Blackdown Hills, is a country town with many craft shops, antique dealers and a fishmonger as well as supermarkets.

Amenities include a sports centre and the Wellington Museum and Monument. Trains between Taunton and London’s Paddington Station take two hours.

In Suffolk, Barratt’s award-winning Bakers Mill, in Great Cornard, on the River Stour is surrounded by rolling countryside and many apartments have views over fields which are reminiscent of Constable’s paintings.

The early 19th-century mill building has been carefully refurbished and will continue to operate as a commercial space.

Surrounding it are a series of townhouses and apartments. Homes at Bakers Mill are priced from £146,950 for a two-bedroom apartment and £234,950 for a four-bedroom townhouse. Two duplex apartments, with views of the river and open countryside, are offered from £259,950.

Bakers Mill is convenient for commuters wanting to live in a rural setting, with Ipswich and Colchester providing services to London’s Liverpool Street in around 75 minutes.
