MADE OF HONOUR: A SUPERIOR ROMANTIC COMEDY

Story Image

Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan star

Sunday May 4,2008

By Henry Fitzherbert

GEORGE CLOONEY'S peculiar taste in romantic comedies leaves the field open for Patrick Dempsey to conquer the genre as a latter-day Cary Grant.

The star of TV’s Grey’s Anatomy has the magic combination of charm, good looks and a light touch, as proved in Enchanted, and he makes a winning lead in Made Of Honour, a wedding comedy with a cute twist.

Dempsey’s womaniser Tom is asked to be the maid of honour to his best friend Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) after belatedly realising he loves her himself.

It’s a contrived set-up but the picture rises above the mechanics of the formula thanks to the fresh, engaging leads and a fun, witty script that delivers numerous laughs and sight gags.

It also keeps you guessing, in part because Hannah’s fiancé, well-to-do Scottish hunk Colin (nicely played by Kevin McKidd) is a perfectly decent guy.

He represents a well-deserved comeuppance for playboy Tom, who never dates the same woman two nights in a row. Now he must get his act together sharpish – the wedding is in two weeks’ time at Colin’s Scottish estate.

The second half relocates to Scotland as the wedding date nears, allowing for some fun fish-out-of-water comedy: tossing the caber is not Tom’s strong point – like the most endearing leading men, Dempsey is not afraid to send himself up. There’s a real spark between him and Monaghan and their relationship is surprisingly affecting.

Directed with panache by Patrick Weiland, Made of Honour is a superior date movie: funny, touching and much better than the recent 27 Dresses.
