UNTIL the likes of The Beatles’ Rubber Soul and The Beach Boys’ own Pet Sounds, Sixties’ pop thrived on the single.

And few acts could produce hits as potent, bizarre and yet chartable as the quintet from south Los Angeles.

Here, they are spread across 16 discs, from the relatively basic Surfin’ USA to the indescribable California Girls.
