BLONDE BOMBSHELL: Rachel McAdams' irresistible Kay

Friday August 1,2008

By Allan Hunter

(Cert PG; 90 mins)

IMAGINE you were planning to leave your wife. You have met a beguiling young woman who makes your heart beat faster and your spirits soar. You still love your wife and have no desire to cause her pain.

What do you do? Of course, you decide that murdering your wife might save you both a lot of upset and humiliation. If you can buy that, you are more likely to swallow the rest of this literate, well-heeled cocktail of B-movie thriller and sly comedy that doesn’t quite fizz. Set in the late Forties, the film has the feel of a short story that is a little too clever for its own good.

Chris Cooper is Harry Allen, a mature businessman who feels as giddy as a teenager because he has fallen in love with the beautiful Kay (Rachel McAdams). He tells his best friend Richard (Pierce Brosnan) that he intends to leave his wife Pat (Patricia Clarkson).

Richard is a cad with an eye for the ladies so he wants to discover if Kay could possibly be as wonderful as Harry claims. The power of love leads both men to act completely out of character in a tidy tale
of deception, betrayal and desperate measures.

The movie’s polished look and expert cast make it entirely watchable even if you never believe a word of it.
