Luckily, Florence the zebra foal is being well looked after by her proud parents, Emily and Frank, as well as devoted keepers at Edinburgh Zoo.

The one-month-old Grevy’s zebra is causing quite a stir as the species is endangered - only 1,500 remain in the wild.

Kathleen Standen, Head of Hoofstock at Edinburgh Zoo, said: “We are delighted with the arrival of Florence as this contributes to the great success the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland has had in helping to conserve such an endangered species.

“Florence is proving to be really popular with our visitors and can be seen spending lots of time playing in her African Plains enclosure.”

Grevy’s zebras, which can be found in Kenya and Ethiopia, are the largest of the three surviving zebra species and have DNA similar to that of horse.

With narrow, black stripes the Grevy’s zebra is hunted for its skin, which fetches a high price on the world market.
