RONALDINHO TO REJECT CITY

TARGET: Ronaldinho

Saturday July 5,2008

By Richard Tanner

MARK HUGHES’ hopes of luring Ronaldinho to Manchester City are fading fast.

is “90 per cent” certain of joining AC Milan, according to his brother and agent, Roberto De Assis, who has held talks with City officials since Christmas.

He said: “It is true, he is likely to go to Milan. Everything is ready for the transfer. It is 90 per cent and we are heading in this direction.”

De Assis said a move to join David Beckham at Los Angeles Galaxy was not in Ronaldinho’s plans after being told by Pep Guardiola he is surplus to requirements at Barcelona.

“He will never play there. He will play in a tournament in Houston for his sponsor but a transfer to the USA is excluded,” said De Assis.

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani said his club were not prepared to break the bank for the two-times world player of the year, admitting they could not match the £10million-a-year wages offered by City.

But Ronaldinho seems determined to stay with an established European ‘super club’ and looks as if he will take a pay cut to join Milan and his Brazil team-mate Kaka.

Hughes wants a quick answer from Ronaldinho in order to press on with rebuilding City’s squad. He has already signed Brazil striker Jo for a club-record £19m but admits he needs more reinforcements to turn City into a top-six side with Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz and David Bentley targeted.

He has already cleared out 10 players and wants to sell Rolando Bianchi, Bernardo Corradi, Danny Mills and Georgios Samaras.

“The balance of the squad isn’t at it should be,” he said. “There is good quality but there are areas we can look to improve and make sure we’re strong in.”
