Owen shakes hands on a move to City

Michael Owen has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Manchester City to sign for the richest club in the world this summer.

OWEN Ready to move on OWEN: Ready to move on

Owen has held talks with City officials, including manager Mark Hughes, in the last few weeks and told them he will join the Abu Dhabi-owned club, on the condition that they remain in the Premier League.

Just before Christmas, Owen, 29, announced he would not sign a new long-term deal at Newcastle in order to leave his options open.

None of the ‘big four’ clubs have expressed a desire to sign him this summer, but City have agreed to meet his £90,000-a-week wage demands and as long as Owen stays fit between now and the end of the season a deal, in principle, has been agreed.

Owen has scored only 29 goals in all competitions since moving to St James’ Park three-and-a-half years ago, but has remained largely injury free this season.
