Drivers are only just realising what the recirculation button in the car is actually for

Along a car dashboard there are many symbolised buttons to press on, but one in particular got a few people scratching their heads in confusion.

"What is this button in my car," one Reddit user asked. "It has to do with AC [air conditioning], I know that...

"And the car gets colder when I press it, but I don't know what it's called; AC has its own button, so it's not that."

The pictured button the Reddit user was referring to was the air recirculation button.

According to experts at Ken Brown Motors, a car sales dealership, the air recirculation button "simply takes the air from inside the car and recirculates it in the cabin".

When it's not turned on, air is pulled into the cabin from the outside air; but what is the purpose of such a button?

Ken Brown Motors elaborated: "On hot days, if you do not recirculate the cooler air in the cabin, then your AC system is pulling hot air from outside and trying to cool it.

"Using the recirculation feature will get your car cooler and will decrease the wear and tear on your AC system."

There are multiple uses for the recirculation button, including to decrease the amount of pollution and exhaust fumes you breathe in if sitting in traffic.

If the driver suffers from hay fever, then the air recirculation button can help stop pollen from entering the car cabin.

One Reddit user quipped: "Push the button when you fart if you have passengers."

Another said they felt they learned this tidbit "so late" in life but offered thanks to the legit answers.

Somebody else recommended turning the air recirculation button off when it's raining or damp outside.

"Leaving it on during those times allows humidity to accumulate and it will condense on the windows and they fog up," the user explained.

Ken Brown Motors verified that the air recirculation button can trap humidity into the car, which can result in misty windows.

This is especially true when the air is cold outside and it's wet weather.

Thus, it seems the best course of action for when it's wet and cold outside is to have the air recirculation button turned off.

But as soon as the weather starts to warm up, and you want to crank up the AC, it's best to turn the air recirculation button on.
