is a flavoursome addition to some kinds of cheese, particularly the blue variety. But for most, it's an unsightly consequence of it incorrectly.

While many people keep this creamy dairy product in the fridge door or the top shelf, it's not enough to ward off green spores.

That's why Briony May-Williams has shared her top storage solutions with BBC Morning Live viewers.

Speaking on the breakfast show, she revealed her top three hacks to keep hard cheeses like Cheddar, and soft, creamy feta fresh.

She explained that unlike most , which use cling film or sandwich bags, her methods utilise less obvious ingredients; sugar cubes, white vinegar and brine.

How to store cheese

According to Briony, extending the shelf life of cheese such as Cheddar, Edam and Gouda, is as simple as adding white vinegar.

She suggested that the vinegar should be used to soak a piece of kitchen roll, then sealed in a zip lock bag along with the cheese.

White vinegar is a mild acid that can kill around 82 percent of mould species, according to Medicine Net, which is why it is often utilised in household cleaning.

According to Briony, using it to preserve dairy "won't affect the taste" and will "prolong the life of the cheese for up to an extra six weeks".

Another expert-approved method used by Briony is to seal cheese in a container with sugar cubes.

The BBC Morning Live presenter suggested: "Once you’ve opened a pack of cheese, transfer it to a food storage container. Pop two sugar cubes inside the container and make sure it is tightly sealed."

According to the former Great British Bake Off star, this will prevent the smell of cheese from filling the rest of the fridge, while absorbing excess moisture which will prevent the cheese from sweating.

This will ultimately keep it fresher for longer. That said, if the sugar cubes melt over time, wipe the container clean and replenish the container with another two cubes for longevity.

Feta fans can keep the soft, creamy cheese as fresh as possible with an alternative storage method. Though it may sound counterintuitive, the best way to fight watery feta is by keeping it in brine.

Briony explained that a sterilised jam jar is the best container for feta rather than the packing it's sold in. She suggested leaving the cheese block whole or cutting it into chunks before transferring it into the jar.

Next, combine two teaspoons of salt with enough cold water in a bowl. When the salt is fully dissolved, pour it into the jar of feta until the cheese is completely submerged.

This should keep the cheese at its best for "up to an extra three weeks", rather than a mere few days.
