Five 'early' diabetes symptoms that can strike on the toilet, according to a doctor

Paying attention to any changes in your urine or stool could help identify serious health problems, including diabetes.

Diabetes describes a chronic condition whereby blood sugar levels rise to dangerous levels if steps are not taken to curtail them.

Worryingly, untreated diabetes can lay the groundwork for a whole host of health problems, ranging from heart disease to nerve damage, making symptom awareness front and centre.

Dr Chun Tang, Medical Director at Pall Mall Medical, told Express.co.uk that “early” symptoms of diabetes can affect various bodily functions, including changes in toilet habits.

The following symptoms could help ring alarm bells.

1. Frequent urination

According to the doctor, one of the “most common” symptoms of diabetes is frequent urination, also known as polyuria.

Dr Tang said when blood sugar levels are high, the kidneys work to remove excess sugar from the bloodstream.

He added: “This leads to an increased production of urine, causing individuals with diabetes to have to use the bathroom more often.”

2. Trouble urinating

While you might feel like you need the loo all the time, diabetes can also cause nerve damage, leaving you struggling with the flow of your pee.

The doctor explained that when nerves that control the bladder function are affected, it can lead to difficulties in starting or stopping the flow of urine, resulting in uncontrolled urine flow or incontinence.

3.Constipation or diarrhoea

Diabetes symptoms don’t only strike when you go to the toilet for a number one.

Fluctuations in blood sugar levels can affect the function of your gastrointestinal tract and lead to constipation.

Dr Tang continued: “On the other hand, sufferers may experience bouts of diarrhoea.

“Uncontrolled diabetes or certain medications used to manage diabetes can lead to gastrointestinal disturbances, resulting in diarrhoea.”

4.Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, describe lumps found inside and around your bottom.

The doctor explained that frequent or straining bowel movements can lead to the development or worsening of haemorrhoids, which can be “more common” in people with diabetes.

5.Smelly urine

In some cases, people with “uncontrolled or undiagnosed diabetes” can develop a severe condition called diabetic ketoacidosis.

The doctor said: “This condition develops when the body starts breaking down fat for energy due to the lack of insulin.

“As a result, ketones (chemicals produced during fat metabolism) accumulate in the bloodstream and can be excreted through urine.”

This can turn the smell of your urine to fruity, according to the expert.

While experiencing these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you have diabetes, it’s important to get checked.

Dr Tang added: “If you notice any of these symptoms or have concerns about your health, consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and diagnosis.

“Early detection and management of diabetes are key to preventing complications and maintaining overall health.”
