Viral TikTok videos have sparked a new approach to teeth brushing that experts support.

The suggested method involves brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, spitting out the excess paste, and avoiding rinsing immediately after.

Dental professionals endorse this technique, advising to brush with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily to prevent cavities.

Not rinsing after brushing helps the fluoride coating to remain on the teeth, offering additional protection.

According to Brittany Seymour, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association (ADA) and an associate professor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, individuals who prefer to rinse after brushing can do so lightly with a small amount of water, such as a sip from the hand, or delay rinsing for approximately 20 minutes, reports Washington Post.

Margherita Fontana, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, mentioned that while skipping the rinse is not necessary for those with healthy teeth, individuals with a high-sugar diet or a predisposition to cavities may benefit from the additional fluoride for extra protection.

“When you rinse, you are basically rinsing away the active ingredients of the toothpaste that you just put on your teeth,” she said.

Fontana suggested an alternative for individuals who prefer rinsing after brushing: using a fluoride-containing mouthwash.
