How to remove musty damp smells from towels

Mrs Hinch fans often share their cleaning tips on social media groups to help others on their journey to achieving a perfectly clean home.

One such hack was an ingenious and affordable method using a kitchen product to stop towels smelling like mould and mildew.

However, one expert from Victorian Plumbing had something to add to make the method work even better.

Mrs Hinch’s fans suggested the addition of white wine vinegar to your next laundry cycle as a solution, but bathroom specialist Brenna Ryan said there’s more to it.

Ryan began: “We love this hack from Mrs Hinch fans, who are adding white wine vinegar into the washing machine when washing towels.

“This is a quick and easy way to stop any musty smells appearing in your bathroom.”

Explaining the method, she added: “To try the hack yourself, simply add half a cup of white wine vinegar into the drum of your washing machine.

“This helps to loosen up the towel's fibres and remove any dirt and bacteria trapped in them.”

The expert continued: “One tip I would recommend when doing this is to increase the heat of your wash, though washing clothes can often be done on colder washes when washing towels increasing the heat to 40-60 degrees can help to ensure they are fully clean and free of the bacteria which causes this musty smell.”

“Adding bicarbonate of soda into your wash can also help give your towels a helping hand, increasing freshness and eliminating odours.”

But the wonders of white vinegar don't stop there; it's also touted as an excellent cleaner for your washing machine's drum.

For a thorough clean, place two cups of vinegar in the drum and run a hot cycle with no clothes.

Meanwhile, a cleaning expert has shared a simple hack that will help you keep your towels soft and fluffy, and it's a trick that is used in top-drawer hotels.

Online Bedrooms’ Nic Shacklock suggested the use of two to three cups of white vinegar in your washing machine, a "popular trick" amongst hotels and holiday spots globally.

He further mentioned: "Products like white vinegar, bleach and extra fabric conditioner are some of the ways to give towels a new spruce of life."

The towel expert also highlighted that this method could potentially prolong the lifespan of your towels: "Towels should be replaced every two years but they may be able to survive a few months longer by using these handy tips."

The expert recommends either adding the vinegar to your fabric softener drawer, which ensures it's watered down and won't overwhelm your towels, or pouring it directly into the drum during the rinse cycle.
