The New York-born former First Lady, Jackie Kennedy Onassis became a household name after her husband, John F. Kennedy, took office as President in 1961.

However, it was her unique fashion sense and charismatic personality that kept the world captivated.

Known for donning oversized sunglasses, elegant chiffon gowns, tweed skirts, and chic Gucci bags (which were later renamed in her honour), Jackie remains a timeless source of style inspiration.

No matter the occasion - a formal White House dinner or simply stepping off a plane - Jackie always radiated an unparalleled level of glamour that will be remembered for generations.

Here are some of Jackie O's most memorable fashion moments of her lifetime.

The former First Lady looked stylish even on long journeys, as pictured in 1959 at Idlewild Airport. The airport was renamed in December 1963 to honour the late president.

Jackie donned a classic sixties-style tea dress with a boat neckline, ruched waist and subtle a-line skirt. She teamed it with white three-quarter-length gloves and a statement pearl necklace.

7. Black occasion co-ord

Though always one for colour, Jackie opted for a tonal co-ord to mark her son John Jr's christening in 1960. The new mother wore a black overcoat with a matching pillbox hat at the Georgetown University Hospital Chapel.

Former President John. F Kennedy and Jackie attended a dinner on May 11, 1962, in honour of the Minister of State for Cultural Affairs of France, Andre Malroux. The presidential style icon was a vision in pink wearing an a-line strapless gown in baby pink, and long white gloves to match.

This set the tone for many future outfits made from satin fabrics with a long skirt and strapless neckline.
