Prince George's first official engagement with his parents didn't go as smoothly as they might have hoped with the then two-year-old royal appearing to break into a tantrum. George joined his parents, Prince William and Princess Kate, as they marked the 75th anniversary of the Royal Air Force with a visit to the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire, in July 2016.

He embarked on the visit well, toddling along the tarmac at the air base holding the hand of his father, who was then Duke of Cambridge and is a qualified pilot. George, like two-year-olds the world over, then seeminly broke into a tantrum in front of his mother, father and those gathered at the event.

Kate, the then-Duchess of Cambridge, scooped her son into her arms and soothed him until the prince felt settled again. For the rest of the visit, George wore ear protectors as the noise of aircraft engines filled the RAF base.

George was shown around some of the aircraft, including a Squirrel helicopter and Red Arrows jet, with William and some of RAF Fairford's pilots. The future king returned to the Royal International Air Tattoo seven years later, sending royal fans into a frenzy as he was joined in July this year by his sister, Princess Charlotte, and brother, Prince Louis.

On that visit eagle-eyed royal watchers observed George’s height, with many recalling the prince's first visit in 2016. Users of X, then known as Twitter, noted the change with one tweeting: "I can’t get over how mature and confident Prince George is getting. He’s turning into a fine young man."

Another wrote: "How time flies so fast, and you can see Prince George of Wales is getting so tall."

Prince George, 10, is now a dab hand at royal engagements, having recently accompanied his siblings and parents to Princess Kate's Westminster Abbey carol service.

The coming year will also see the youngster embark on the next stage of his school career as he moves to secondary school in the autumn.

It recently emerged George may follow in his mother's footsteps by starting at Marlborough College, Wiltshire, where Princess Kate was reportedly spotted on a tour accompanied by her eldest son.

George attending the £47,000 a year private school would signal a departure from his father's schooling, with Prince William and his brother Prince Harry both having been schooled at Eton College, near Windsor.
