Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are fighting against a "ticking time bomb" to secure the renewal of their multi-million agreement with Netflix, a Royal Family expert warned.

Last year, the couple's six-part documentary was the most-watched factual series on the streaming platform. But since then, they've been facing backlash in Hollywood and could see their efforts to secure a spot among the stars collapse.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were recently brutally mocked at the Golden Globes by comedian Jo Koy who joked they were "being paid millions by Netflix for doing nothing."

This comes after Netflix reportedly told them they need to create more interesting content if they want to receive the remaining £40 million of their contract.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams warned that things look grim for the Sussexes unless they start brainstorming before their contract with their production company Archewell and Netflix ends.

He expressed concern about Harry and Meghan's Netflix contract expiring in 2025, suggesting that if they don't produce successful content soon, they could face serious ramifications.

The royal commentator noted: "It's important also to remember the Netflix contract goes on to 2025.

"Netflix is no longer producing The Crown, and from that point of view, it may well be, if the Sussexes, don't produce what they want. If they lost that, they really would be losers in every sense."

According to Fitzwilliams, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's docu-series 'Harry & Meghan' was the only one that caught the public's attention, primarily because of its critical viewpoint on the Royal Family.

However, he mentioned that none of their other projects managed to garner significant impact, as stated in his interview with The Sun.

He warned: "The facts of the matter are that he pointed out pretty categorically that they have done absolutely nothing for Netflix, really, and the one exception, of course, being Invictus, and that was very worth it but too long of a wait.

"If you simply trash your family, which is the only time it does seem to mean that you get megabucks, and do nothing else, then you must expect people not to take you seriously."

Royal biographer weighs in on Harry and Meghan's 'American dream'

Despite the initial hype around the Royal couple's various projects, none have proven to be a hit so far.

Their documentary failed to rank amongst the top 200 shows on Netflix from January-June, and Harry's series 'Heart of Invictus' faced a similar fate.

Adding to that, Meghan's animated series 'Pearl' was discreetly dropped by the streaming service after failing to impress viewers.

Furthermore, they lost their £18 million contract with Spotify last year after executives bemoaned the couple's lack of creativity in their product pitches.
