Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been on the scene at the busy road after the crash, which is thought to have involved three cars, coincided with a fourth vehicle smashing into a tree on the opposite side of the accident. It is unknown yet whether there are any casualties.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to a crash there around 10.20am this morning and emergency services are at the scene."

The multi-vehicle collision led to the partial blockage of the A77 in both directions and a particularly congested northbound carriageway.

Shortly before midday, Traffic Scotland confirmed all northbound lanes were clear.
