It brings the total number of migrants making the journey from France this year to 34,672.

The Ministry of Defence said 25 boats were detected on Sunday containing 1,065 people.

A further 367 asylum seekers were rescued by French authorities after getting into difficulty at sea.

The first groups were escorted to shore by Border Force officials in the early hours of the morning. Crossings continued throughout the day, with the last migrants arriving around 8pm.

On August 22, a total of 1,295 migrants landed, the highest number on a single day since current records began in 2018.

Last year, 28,526 people are known to have crossed the Channel.

A government spokesperson said: “Despite the lies they have been told, migrants who travel through safe countries to illegally enter the UK will not be allowed to start a new life here.”
