Snow falls in parts of UK with Met Office warning 48 hours of chaos

The Met Office has put three yellow weather warnings in place for the next 48 hours as wind and rain is set to batter the country.

Parts of Devon experienced heavy snowfall last night as Storm Nelson is set to bring 70mph winds over the next 48 hours. The Met Office has issued a number of yellow weather warnings for parts of the UK - including England's south coast, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The forecaster warned that in Wales, rain "could turn into snow overnight", causing possible travel disruption this morning.

Meanwhile, pictures on social media platform X show snow falling in parts of Devon last night, with a yellow weather warning in place for "strong winds and large coastal waves". This covers Devon, as well as Portsmouth, Brighton and Cornwall.

Parts of Northern Ireland have a warning in place for rain, with blistery conditions expected.

Yellow weather warning updated

The Met Office have updated their yellow weather warning for wind to last until midnight.

They warned that gusts up to 70mph will hit southern England today.

Flooding at campsite in Wales

A campsite in Pembrokeshire, Wales, has been forced to close after heavy rainfall left flooding.

Newgale Campsite told visitors on Facebook that 70 percent of the site was flooded, leaving dozens of holidaymakers forced to cancel their Easter weekend plans.

Where has snow fallen?

The snow fell across a wide area of the county, including around the vast Dartmoor National Park in south Devon, and Exmoor in north Devon.

A thick blanket of the white stuff still lay on the ground on Thursday morning.

The forecast was set to turn much more wet as the day progressed, with the Met Office predicting heavy rain across Devon as Storm Nelson is due to roll in.

Weather warning extends into Friday

The Met Office have extended weather warnings into Friday morning.

115 flood alerts and 3 flood warnings in place for England

The Environment Agency has issued 115 food alerts and 3 flood warnings for parts of England as heavy rain is forecast.

Their warning reads: "Local coastal/tidal flooding is possible along the Dorset coast on Thursday.

"Local inland flooding impacts are possible in parts of England on Thursday, continuing into Friday due to rain falling on already wet ground.

"Local flooding from groundwater is possible but not expected across parts of the South of England for the next five days.

"Lands, roads and some properties may flood and there may be travel disruption."

Weather maps forecast snow for Wales and Scotland today

Parts of Wales and Scotland could experience snow flurries this morning as weather maps from WXCharts suggest 1cm will fall.

The Met Office warned this snow could cause travel disruption this morning and urged motorists to plan ahead.

Storm Nelson named by Spanish forecasters

The Met Office has now named the storm, but Spanish forecasters Aemet have.

Weather warnings are in place until 3am on Friday, with rain likely to sweep through the UK.

BBC meteorologist Helen Willetts told Radio 4: "The low pressure that's throwing this rain our way has now been named as Storm Nelson by the Spanish met service.

"And it will bring some stronger winds our way as well later tonight and tomorrow."
