A little girl has died in a horror crash in Birmingham and two men arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Police and paramedics rushed to the scene in Upper Highgate Street, Highgate, at around 9.45pm on Sunday, April 14.

They found the youngster suffering from critical injuries and immediately began administering advanced life support but despite best efforts she was confirmed dead at the scene.

Two women were treated by medics for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment. Another child involved in the collision was assessed by ambulance crews but discharged at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) said a car and four pedestrians were involved in the collision.

They added a "female child" was in a critical condition and ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support.

The spokesperson said: "Sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, she could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene."

Two women were treated by medics for serious but not life-threatening injuries and were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for more treatment.

A fourth patient, a child, was checked by paramedics but wasn't injured and so was discharged at the scene, according to WMAS.

Birmingham Police said the girl, who is understood to have been just four-years-old, sustained "serious injuries" and was confirmed dead at the scene.

The force said in a statement: "Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this dreadful time and we'll be doing all we can to support them."

It added detectives are in the early stages of their investigation, but believe a grey Mercedes was close to the Corsa and officers are currently treating what happened as a collision between two cars.

Birmingham Police said the vehicles and drivers remained at the scene, adding that two men, aged 21 and 24, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. They were taken into custody.

Det Sgt Paul Hughes, from the force's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "A young girl has tragically lost her life and I can only imagine the pain her loved ones are going through at this awful time.

"This is deeply upsetting for everyone and we'll be doing everything we can to support them and get answers to exactly what happened last night."

He added officers want to hear from anyone who was in the area around the time and can help with enquiries, particularly those with dashcam footage.

Det Sgt Hughes said: "These are early days in our investigation and I'd urge people not to speculate around the circumstances. We need to deal with facts so we can complete a thorough investigation and provide the answers the girl's family and friends deserve."
