A group of "feral" youths have been caught on camera battling with what appeared to be sword-like weapons and hammers during broad daylight outside a primary school.

The shocking scenes in Plaistow, London, looked like a war zone as a group of yobs hacked and slashed at one another with blades just yards from the entrance of Southern Road Primary School.

Horrified onlookers watched as the armed youngsters engaged in a frenzy of violence on the street at around 3pm on Friday. The Metropolitan Police said officers and an armed response unit attended and four male teenagers were arrested.

A video posted on the local Newham People's Alliance Facebook page showed an unmarked police car hurtle towards the fight before officers leapt out the vehicle to break up the violent melee.

A spokesperson said one teenager was taken to hospital with a hand injury.

Commenting on the disgraceful scenes unfolding in the video, one person wrote on the Newham People's Alliance Facebook page: "I live close to there and see these feral kids most days after school. Good thing the police arrived but these events happen too often."

Another person added: "Right as schools were finishing, what is Plaistow coming to?"

Pointing to the apparent age of the people involved in the dangerous fight, someone else sarcastically wrote: "I am sure when their parents see this, I wounder if they will be proud of their little darlings?"

"Officers, including firearms officers, attended. Four boys aged in their mid-teens were arrested.

"One teenager was taken to hospital for treatment to a hand injury and has since been discharged. Detectives from the North East Command Unit are investigating."
