A man has died after 'falling ill' at a police station in Swindon and an investigation has now been launched.

A man has died after 'falling ill' while in police custody.

The man, aged in his 30s, died at Gablecross Police Station in Swindon this morning and now an official investigation ha been launched.

He was pronounced dead at about 9am after becoming "unwell". He had been in custody since Saturday morning.

The death has now been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Superintendent Steve Cox said: “We can confirm a man in his 30s has died while in custody at Gablecross Police Station, Swindon, today.

“The man, who had been held in custody since Saturday morning, became unwell this morning and was sadly declared deceased at around 9am.

“As a result, we have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) who are now independently investigating.

“It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”
