The England cricketer posted a tweet about how pretty Murray's long term girlfriend is and then wrote the word 'punching' as a Twitter hashtag.

The tweet from the 27-year-old, who is set to take part in the upcoming Ashes series, was labelled as 'sexist' and 'shameful' by people on the social networking site.

Broad wrote: "Don’t really follow tennis, but well done Andy Murray on the quality of your Mrs. #punching #teamadidas."

Wimbledon fans enjoying the historic moment blasted Broad for the tweet.

One user wrote: "So sexist. Was this even necessary?"

While another Twitter user posted: "What a clown. Shameful comment".

The tweet has not been responded to by Murray, 26, who has been busy enjoying his historic victory on Centre Court.

Murray ended a 77 year wait for a British male champion by beating world number one Novak Djokovic 6-4 7-5 6-4 to claim his second Grand Slam title.

However, Broad wasn't the only one to make a faux pas about the new SW19 champion.

The New York Times congratulated Murray and 'England' following the Glasgow born's historic win.

The last British male to win the Wimbledon title was Fred Perry in 1936.
