US voters have trashed Joe Biden's record as President in a new poll giving him his worst ratings ever on a range of key policy areas.

But the findings by the Democracy Institute reveal that while Americans overall think Donald Trump was the much better President, the narrow margins in the swing states mean that Biden could still win the election in November.

The survey of 1,500 likely voters revealed that overall across the whole of the USA, Trump has a commanding five point lead over Biden by 42 percent to 37 percent with former Democrat turned independent Robert F. Kennedy in third on 14 percent.

But the polling dramatically narrows in the key swing states to 44 percent for Trump and 41 percent for Biden, giving Trump a three point lead.

Most alarmingly for the Trump camp, he and Biden are neck and neck in Michigan on 43 percent each. The Republican leads by just one point in Wisconsin on 45 percent to 44 percent while in Pennsylvania he leads Biden by 45 percent to 42 percent.

There is some relief in threee other states for Trump, with a massive six point lead of 47 to 41 in Georgia, and five point leads of 45 to 40 in Nevada and 47 to 42 in Arizona.

But the closeness of the key swing states which will decide the race to the White House, come against disastrous poll ratings for Biden on his record as President.

Of those surveyed 56 percent gave him a negative job rating as opposed to 40 percent positive.

With two thirds saying the economy is the top issue for them, 66 percent also say that Biden has performed badly with the economy.

Another 67 percent have given Biden a negative rating on foreign policy with controversies raging over the wars in Ukraine and Israel/ Gaza.

Asked to compare Biden with Trump as President, 56 percent say they were better off when his rival was in the White House and 52 percent to 37 percent said Trump was the better President.

Most alarmingly, seven in 10 Americans think the country is heading in the wrong direction under Biden and 61 percent say the American dream is no longer a realistic goal.

Democracy Institute Director Patrick Basham explained that the reason Biden could still win despite being seen as a hopeless President is because Democrats who do not want him are terrified about another Trump presidency.

He said: "More than 50 percent of Democratic voters are very disappointed with Biden, but they can't stand the thought of Trump back in the White House. So, they are holding their noses to vote again for Biden."
