The latter half of January is bringing with it brutal cold and waves of snow across the UK.

Yellow and amber weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office detailing where exactly the white stuff will fall this week. One of the amber warnings, which tells Brits there could be a threat to life, is in place for a full 27 hours.

Last night the coldest night of the winter so far was recorded in Dalwhinnie, a village on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park, as the Met Office confirmed a brutal -14C was registered. Much of Britain will continue to see freezing temperatures throughout the week ahead.

A yellow warning for snow and ice is in place from midnight until 11.59pm today for Highlands and Eilean Star, stretching all the way to the Shetland Islands and the majority of Northern Ireland.

The weather agency says that “frequent heavy snow showers will continue push inland, likely disrupting travel across the region.”

But from 3pm, an amber snow warning will be in place for many of the same areas, warning of “frequent heavy snow showers”.

Travel delays are “likely”, the Met Office said, as are power cuts. Mobile phone service could be affected and some rural communities could become cut off entirely.

The weather agency added: “Further frequent, occasionally heavy, snow showers will affect the Northern Isles and northwest Scotland through Wednesday evening and Thursday with an additional 5-10 cm of snow likely, and the potential for a further 15-20 cm of snow in a few locations. In addition strengthening northerly then northwesterly winds will cause lying snow to drift.”

It states that it is safer not to drive at all in the snowy conditions if it can be avoided.

Later in the week, areas further south are predicted to see snow. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings both for Wales’s coastline, Cornwall, and the east coast from Newcastle to Norwich.

With both weather warnings coming to an end tomorrow midday, both state that these areas are likely to see snow showers - some of them “heavy”.
