A previous version of the headline erroneously stated that the Met Office issued a UK flood warning. We are happy to clarify that it was in fact the Environment Agency who issued the warning.

Brits have been warned to brace themselves for flooding as almost 50 places are put on alert.

The Environment Agency has slapped four areas across the country with flood warnings - and a further 44 with flood alerts.

The agency said that homes and businesses, railway lines and infrastructure and roads can “be at risk” when a flood warning is in force.

Also on the list of areas often worst hit by flooding are “coastal areas affected by spray or waves overtopping, flood plains, including caravans park and campsites, major tourist and leisure attractions,” added the agency.

The locations with flood warnings include Barcombe Mills on the River Ouse, Freshfield Bridge to Sharpsbridge on the River Ouse, Lindfield Bridge on the River Ouse - all near York - and Mock Bridge, near Shermanbury on the River Adur, Sussex.

The flood alerts are mainly scattered in the south east of the country.

Weather expert Jim Dale, however, says that the alerts are at their lowest level for some time - but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of “disturbed” weather.

Mr Dale, founder and senior meteorological consultant at British Weather Services, said: “The warnings and alerts are at their lowest level for several months and will inevitably decline further as the dry and predominantly sunny weather continues for the rest of this week and most of the weekend.

“However, it’s not over yet with a change in weather fortunes on the agenda for the beginning of what will be a disturbed following week.”

He added: “In a climate changing world I believe we must get used to it, with worse to come into the future if climate mitigation measures don’t speed up.”

The Met Office predicts a largely dry day - but with rain in the northwest later.

It said: “A murky start in places, but cloud will break up to give a largely dry day with sunny spells for many.

“A band of cloud and outbreaks of rain however will move into northwestern Scotland and Northern Ireland later.”

However the organisation also predicts that by tomorrow, Thursday, May 8 things will be “feeling warm.”

It added: “The far north remaining rather cloudy with some patchy rain, otherwise a mostly fine and dry day across the UK with spells of sunshine. Feeling warm for many.”
