McCartney: I wanna be your man!

SIR Paul McCartney and his new love Nancy Shevell have sealed their love by getting engaged – but they don’t want to make an official announcement in case the happy moment is hijacked by his former wife Heather Mills.

A friend said that every time something was published about the former Beatle’s relationship, Heather seized the opportunity to steal the limelight for herself.

Meanwhile Sir Paul, 66, has told friends that the more time he and Nancy, 47, spend together the more he feels she is the closest thing to his first wife Linda, who died more than a decade ago.

“Paul just loves being in love. He feels that he functions better and feels more complete as a human being,” said a member of his circle.

“It’s as though being in love is a natural state for him.”

Far from the glamour that Heather, 41, craved during their short and tempestuous marriage, Nancy and Paul prefer to shun celebrity restaurants and head to the kitchen to cook and eat their meals together.

Everyone who knows them insists that when the day comes to walk down the aisle there will be no extravagant wedding because he wants everything to be the opposite of what Heather demanded.

Paul has said: “Nancy is enough like Linda to make me happy again – and enough of a woman for me to feel like I’m embarking on a whole new journey.

“I was at rock bottom when I met Heather. I didn’t know what I wanted. This time I do.

“Nancy and I both happened to be in the right place at the right time, so here I go again. It’s what life’s all about, isn’t it?”

Paul has already suggested going back to Caxton Hall, the London register office where he and Linda tied the knot in a low-key ceremony in 1969, for the wedding.

He has also suggested his farmhouse on the Mull of Kintyre as a possible venue for the honeymoon. It is his favourite place and he and Linda loved staying there throughout their marriage.

The friend added: “Nancy is said to be keen to embrace everything that Paul adores. She doesn’t need the glamour that Heather craved. She is the opposite of Heather, who tried to change so many aspects of his personality and lifestyle. Nancy has worked out very quickly that the key to maintaining a love affair with Paul is to Let It Be.

“Best of all for Paul, she’s no gold digger. She has money in her own right, so he feels very comfortable. The wedding will be sooner rather than later – at Paul’s age you don’t hang about. I can’t think of a soul who’d deny him happiness.”

However, a spokesman for Sir Paul last night said: “There is no truth in it whatsoever. They have not become engaged in any shape or form. It is utter nonsense.”
